As comfortable as we may be with who we are, most of us know deep down that we are not there yet. That is, we have not yet arrived at who we are supposed to be. At New Foundation Church, we believe that God wants to transform each of us into something better, something greater. That transformation begins when we decide to follow Jesus, and it continues until the day we stand before him face-to-face. Sometimes, it is fast. Sometimes, it is slow. But always, he is working to change us.
That change is deeper than behavior. Romans 12:1-2 says that we are to be “transformed by the renewing of our minds” so that we can discern and do the will of God. That is, he wants to change the way that we think to align with the way he thinks and the way we feel to mesh with the way he feels. As a result, we will begin to want the same things God wants, and then we will seek to do them.
Along the way, there will be times when we grow frustrated and discouraged. In those moments, we need to remember the promise of Philippians 1:6: “He who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Put another way, if you are frustrated or discouraged that your transformation is moving too slowly, or even afraid that God will just abandon you because you’ve failed him one too many times, you can rest easy. It may take a minute, but God is still working.
