In Matthew 7:24-29, Jesus told a story about two men who built glorious homes for themselves. The first of these men built his house on the rock, while the second build his house on the sand. Then the storm came. The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew, pounding both houses, and when the sun rose, the glorious new home built on the sand had collapsed with a great crash.

Most people immediately understand the difference between the two homes: the sand washed away in the storm while the rock held firm.

For Jesus, though, this was more than a story. It was a parable intended to make a point that went beyond the obvious. In this case, he explained his point in verse 24: “Everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” In other words, if we build our lives on Jesus’ character and commands, we will be able to withstand whatever the world may throw at us.

At New Foundation Church, we aim to build our lives on Jesus’ character and commands. This means that we preach and teach from the Bible, which reveals these things. And it means we are trying to conform our attitudes and actions to his, rather than the other way around. We fully understand that lead to some discomfort, but we embrace that discomfort and promise to work with each other to grow more like Jesus every day.

All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. -2 Timothy 3:16-17 CSB
